Dave's dream of cycling the world coming true... This time, he didn't only drag along a trailer with his Sitar - but also me!

Thessaloniki bis Athen

Mittwoch, 7. Mai:
Abschied von Dean, Vicky und Deans Eltern.
Saying good-bye to Dean, Vicky and Dean's parents.
Since we have to pack up and buy groceries after breakfast, it's already 2 pm when we leave Thessaloniki. At first, we ride towards Athens on the shoulder of the highway.
What a service: bilingual traffic signs!
Die Landschaft spricht wieder mal für sich…
The scenery is just beautiful!
Hiding next to a truck, we sneak through two toll stations before we finally turn onto a quiet and idyllic side road right next to the Aegean Sea.
Our progress is quick and uncomplicated, and our legs seem to remember what needs to be done surprisingly well after their two months break. The arms on the other hand are super sore!

Unser heutiges Nachtlager. Herz, was willst du mehr?
Our camp spot tonight. What more could you possibly wish for?

Gefahrene Strecke: 52,12 km
Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit: 16, 03 km/h
Nachtlager: abgelegene Wiese mit Meerblick (Irgendwann-bleib-I-dann-durt-Camp I.)

Donnerstag, 8. Mai:

Gemütliches Frühstück mit Meerblick.
Relaxed breakfast with sea view.
Klare Beschilderungen ;-)
Clear signposting ;-)

The old highway we're riding on along the westside of the Aegean Sea, is wedged between the new highway and the train tracks. Not very photogenic but dead straight and absolutely flat. And on our right, we get to see Mount Olympus most of the time.
On the map it looked like we were going to ride around the Platamonas Castle. But in reality, we have to climb the 16% hill up to the top only to roll down on the other side.
That's it for today. We camp behind a soccer field in Neoi Pori. All the hotels are still barricaded and the roads deserted, but "our" frog biotope is where all the action is all night!
The good thing about it is that we hardly get attacked by mosquitoes.
Very hard to see but there are two frogs flirting here.

Gefahrene Strecke: 68,45 km
Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit: 14,81 km/h
Nachtlager: Feuchtbiotop in Neoi Pori

Freitag, 9. Mai:
Today, we continue riding through all sorts of small villages. This is the property of a sports freak who expresses his passion by arranging and painting sea shells on the walls.

The landscape in this area is marvellous and the secondary (rather tertiary, actually) highways are perfect for bike touring. But the signposting is so misleading in some places that we have to ask for directions a lot and one time, we even end up on a very bumpy farm road.
Eine Schildkröte am Wegrand.
Tortoise at the side of the road.

Geschafft!
Done! The highest point of today is only at 200 metres altitude but right now we're a little bit out of shape. Besides, the whole grind was totally pointless because there's a coastal road leading AROUND the hill, as we can see from up here!

We take a more than necessary and refreshing bath in the sea before setting up our tent right on the beach of Kato Sotiritsa.

Gefahrene Strecke: 51,88 km
Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit: 13,82 km/h
Nachtlager: Strand von Kato Sotiritsa (Irgendwann-bleib-I-dann-durt-Camp II.)

Samstag, 10. Mai:
Aufbruchsstimmung.
Atmosphere of departure. We had planned to have breakfast in one of the cafés in the village but that turns out to be harder than expected. The loud music coming out of the open doors is only meant to entertain the staff doing their spring clean-up. They tell us we could have coffee as a special exception, but they will only have food in June. A woman passing by realizes our situation and takes us to the bakery...
Another day full of little farm villages, crop fields and fruit plantations, but this time the route is flat. In Kalamaki, we meet three touring cyclists from Germany but those lightly packed senior citizens are way to fast for us...
Arrival in Volos in the evening. At the moment, the sun goes down just after 8 pm which allows us a nice and long riding day.

Gefahrene Strecke: 99,45 km (mein persönlicher Rekord!)
Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit: 16,98 km/h
Nachtlager: Hotel Admitos in Volos

Sonntag, 11. Mai:
Ruhetag in Volos.
Rest day in Volos.
We go for a walk through the town and along the marina, order a big Greek mixed barbecue platter for lunch and reserve two seats for the bus to Athens tomorrow. But don't think that we're sick of cycling already: I just have to fly to Munich on Wednesday but I'll be back on Thursday to continue our trip from Athens.

In the evening, we get to watch for the second time this week how a pedestrian is crossing the street without looking and being knocked over.

Montag, 12. Mai:
Bus ride to Athens: The entire stretch of the highway is lined with blooming oleander and broom bushes, with rough rocks, small bays, crop fields and olive groves as a backdrop.
Our favourite method of navigating through unfamiliar cities: We plan the route on Google maps and take pictures of it directly from the monitor. On the spot, I just take out the camera, look at the pictures and delete them as we go.

Dienstag, 13. Mai:
Orientierungsspaziergang in Athen.
Orientational walk through Athens.

In and around the Central Market there's an indescribable hustling and bustling, accompanied by the vendors' shouting and scooters honking.
Shop for antiques and curiosities. This crammed spiral staircase continues to the fourth floor.
Dave holding a Baglamas, the smallest sister of the Bouzouki.
In the market, you can also buy fresh fruits and vegetables of course, built to perfect pyramids.
Und wieder ein Musikgeschäft.
And another music shop.
Odd combination of antique architecture and modern graffiti.
Das besterhaltene antike Bauwerk in Athen, der Turm der Winde: Wetterstation, Sonnenuhr, Wasseruhr.
The Tower of the Winds is the best-preserved antique building in Athens: weather station, sun dial and water metre.

Gleich ums Eck ist das Museum für Griechische Volksmusikinstrumente.
Just around the corner, we find the museum of popular Greek instruments.

You can listen to most of the instruments displayed via head phones.

An jeder Ecke spielen hier Straßenmusikanten!
Street musicians everywhere!
We take a walk in the National Garden which is right next to the Parliament, the former royal palace (until 1973).

For dinner, we treat ourselves to a portion of Kebab (top) and barbecued lamb ribs (bottom).

Freitag, 16. Mai:
Tag der Steinbrockenbesichtigung.
Let's have a look at some ancient rocks!
Smart restaurateurs use the steps to the Acropolis as their beer garden / street café.
And here we are! Although it's only mid May, we are not the only people who decided to visit the old city fortress of Athens today.

It'll fall over!

Blick hinüber zum Filopapposdenkmal auf dem Filopapposhügel.
View to the Filopappos hill with the Filopappos monument.
And finally: the Parthenon, nearly 2500 years old and probably the most famous building of Greece. Well, and the biggest fixer-upper around: This is the only picture without cranes, scaffolds, construction workers or any other disturbing details.
Since 1986, reality looks more like this.
Shelf with numbered rocks which hopefully will be put into their old place at some time.

All around the Parthenon, you find big chunks of marble waiting to become part of the temple again.

The fortress wall also has some parts missing - check out the number on this one!

Eine mühselige und langsame Arbeit!
What an arduous and slow job!
More annoying than the construction ambience though are the supervisors on site, armed with shrill-sounding whistles, who stop any kind of harmless infringements (jumping, eating, smoking, touching or climbing objects and so on) by whistling, waving and shouting at visitors.

Die alte Stadtmauer von außen.
The old city wall from outside.
Kurze Pause im Dionysostheater.
Short break in the Theatre of Dionysos.
Now that's too bad. I thought I could take one of the statues with me:

… and again from the Temple of Zeus.

One of the pillars lies on the ground in slices.

Wieder kurze Pause im Schatten. Heute sind wir schon einige Kilometer marschiert!
We take another brake in the shade. Today, we've already walked several kilometres!
Toll in Griechenland: Die meisten Orte haben frei zugängliche Trinkwasserbrunnen.
Cool thing in Greece: There are free accessible drinking water fountains in most towns.
In 1896, this was the scene of the first Olympic Games of modern age: the Panathinaikon Stadium in the centre of Athens, seating up to 80,000 spectators.

Not so much a brilliant achievement of architecture but a whole new experience for Dave: public toilet European style.

You can imagine quite easily that when they built the underground train in Athens, archaeologists were just as busy as construction workers. Here is a Roman thermal bath they found.

So hat es hier früher mal ausgesehen!
This is how it used to look like!
Hundreds of different lampshades are hanging above this street. Do they really serve as street lamps at night?
We cannot believe it but there is a shop for graffiti sprayers in Athens, apparently legal but we didn't ask.

My personal favourite building in Athens is this modern steel and glass construction with "antique" balconies. Isn't that cool?
